Our Approach to Learning
At FRS Kindergarten the child’s experience must always be central to the thinking of every teacher.
Children are powerful learners driven by curiosity and interest. As educators, we challenge ourselves on a daily basis to respond to the individual developmental and learning needs of the children and engage and enthuse them through fun activities, meaningful experiences and purposeful play.
We have a playful and dynamic approach to teaching and learning, providing open-ended materials which invite and cultivate thinking, collaboration and creativity.
We use children’s interests and motivations to develop a rich teaching and learning environment. The more engaged a child is, the higher the well-being and the greater the learning, attainment and progress. Happy children are motivated learners!
Our Curriculum meets the standards for learning, development and care of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2014).
For our two year olds, we focus on the Prime areas of development:
-
Personal, Social and Emotional development
-
Communication and Language development
-
Physical development
For our three and four year olds, the curriculum broadens to include more focus on:
-
Mathematics
-
Literacy
-
Understanding the World
-
Expressive Arts and Design
Interwoven into everything we do are the Characteristics of Learning which we hope to instil in each child, promoting a positive attitude to exploration, learning and challenge, encouraging them to express and follow their ideas by thinking critically and having a go.
Across the year we use topics linked to religious festivals, national campaigns or children’s well-being or interests. Our topics act as ‘hooks’ on which to provide children with rich experiences, developing their cultural capital, such as inviting the local fire brigade to park their fire engine in the playground, welcoming a PAT (Pets as Therapy) dog to the setting, or heading into town by coach to visit The Royal Mews whilst learning about Kings and Queens to name just a few.
