Rabbi Howard Cooper
After an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies, I trained at Leo Baeck College (graduating in 1980), followed by studies in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, gaining a professional qualification in 1985.
Since then I have followed a dual professional path, working as a therapist and supervisor in private practice, alongside part-time rabbinic work (much of which has been at FRS). I have also been able to develop my interest in language and literature, with an MA (with Distinction) in Creative Writing and Critical Theory (2004) along with authoring and editing several books on Jewish, psychological and spiritual themes; reviewing for a variety of publications; and attempting an ongoing blog on contemporary themes.
At FRS, I have the rather intriguing (and maybe grandiose!) title of ‘Director of Spiritual Development’: I am involved in the community in a variety of ways including teaching, services (regular and alternative), shiurim, running various groups such as an ongoing ‘Exploring Spirituality’ group, and trying to be as supportive a colleague as possible to our multi-talented clergy team, as well as offering what I can to the community at large.
