Sukkat Shlomecha: Creating safe spaces with a Kosher Queen
Saturday, 19 October, 2024 • 17 Tishrei 5785
6:30 PM - 8:00 PMJewish musician Raymond Zachary (aka international Drag Queen Miss Livinya Karr) joins us all the way from LA to present a fun-filled musical program that will engage, enlighten, and entertain!
How can we create safe spaces for our LGBTQIA+ friends and neighbours? How has Raymond been able to combine drag & Bima life, and… what does the Torah say about it all!
Raymond Zachary is a classically trained countertenor currently located in East L.A. They attended the American Jewish University as a Jewish studies major and has served as a shliach tzibur (service leader) for several years, having the opportunity to sing with some of the most prestigious names in cantorial music. Raymond currently serves on the board of the Guild of Temple Musicians supervising a portfolio focused on Diversity and Inclusion, and is the new associate clergy at congregation B’nai Tzedek!
Outside of synagogue life, Raymond is an award-winning Musical theatre actor and has performed in numerous symphonic and theatrical productions. With their drag persona, Miss Livinya Karr, Raymond wrote a series of programming called Rainbow Shabbat which has been implemented in synagogues all across the country. This shabbaton encourages LGBTQIA+ shul-goers to not only feel comfortable as a “Jew-in-the-pew” but serves as an outreach programme to say that their community encourages them to take leadership positions on their boards, committees, and even as their clergy. It also provides synagogues with tools and resources to create safe and accepting spaces for congregants who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community.
