Czech Scroll Group

The FRS Czech Scroll is central to the efforts of our community to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust. The scroll, on loan from the Czech Scrolls Memorial Trust, comes from Uhříněves, a town about 15km from Prague.

The Jews of Uhříněves were deported on 12 September 1942 to Terezín (Theresienstadt).  2022 therefore marks the 80th anniversary of the deportation. 2022 is also the 60th anniversary of the Czech Scrolls Memorial Trust.

Covid restrictions have prevented the Czech Scroll Group from running our normal programme of education, or our exchange visits with Uhříněves; we hope to organise a visit when conditions permit.

A Zoom memorial service was held on Shabbat Shuva in September 2021 (just after Rosh Hashanah, the time when the Jews of Uhříněves were deported).  At the service, we leyned from the scroll and Mike Frankl, a former Chair of FRS who now lives in Cambridge, told the fascinating story of his family in Bohemia, from the birth in 1741 of his great-great-great-grandmother, Rachel Frankl, to the escape from Prague just before the Second World War of his parents and his brother and sister.

If you are interested in the work of the group, or have a family history connected to the Czech Republic that you would like to tell, please contact one of the co-chairs:
