Community Quilt Project
The Community Quilt Project was born at the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020. In our collective fear and isolation, we wanted to bring people together, using the skills of their hands, to create beauty in our chaotic world, and for our emergent new synagogue building. Volunteers were supplied with the materials to create a square based on the theme of ‘Things that give us strength’. Participants used stitch, paint, appliqué, collage and quilting in their work. Each participant was offered support by a mentor to help develop and complete their idea.
The result was over 20 completed squares which have been sewn into 3 pieces to hang in the new building.
Members of all ages took part, from teenagers to those in their 10th decade, all sharing their thoughts and feelings about getting through the pandemic. The hangings are a snapshot in time, demonstrating beauty, colour and life, in defiance of bewilderment and fear in those early months of 2020.
